Thun - ladies heats

After 2 full days of competition the ladies finally took to the water for their prelims. For the first competition since Graz 2003 (when they reduced team sizes) there were enough ladies (43) to cut to a quarter final of 20, instead of going straight to a semi of 10.

I was the first GB lady up in one of the earlier heats and had a couple of solid rides with blunts and clean spins, putting me in 9th place for the quarter finals. Emily Wall was in the following heat and got a really nice back stab in her second run, unfortunately she then caught an edge and flushed off the wave early. Her final ride was solid though with some nice roundhouses and a clean spin and she took enough points to put her into the next round in 13th place.

The Welsh flag was flying for Lowri Davies as she paddled onto the wave after a lunch break for the judges. She was very unlucky in her first ride as the wave totally greened out as she went to catch it – it seemed this put her out of her stride for her remaining rides as she took another few unlucky flushes meaning she didn’t get the points for the top 20 cut.

The top of the field: Ruth Gordon, Emily Jackson, Mariann Saether, Tanya Faux were a long way ahead of the rest of the ladies – the difference was mainly in the verticality and air on the moves and also several big moves that were being scored, including a donkey flip from Ruth, a felix from Mariann and a huge pan am from Tanya. Along with Emily Jackson's consistent flip turns and super-fast flash-backs (scored as clean back blunt/roundhouse) these ladies are going to be hard to beat!
